I had always wanted a good quality digital camera, as I considered myself a pretty good amateur photographer. My wife gave me the Canon SX200, as an early Christmas gift. Actually, I caught her looking at the SX200 on Amazon.com, along with the sd1200isand the SD990ISmodels.
She simply asked me which model I wanted, and I told her that all of them are excellent, but I would go with the SX200. Frankly, I read about each of them, and the features of that model just appealed to me. Besides, my wife got a GREAT deal from Amazon, about 150.00 off list and free shipping! So, she figured that it was a good time to buy the SX200!
My first impression is that the Canon SX200 is really sharp looking, with that imposing piece of glass in front. The 12x zoom is contained in a HUGE barrel that pops out like some kind of Nasa telescope!
The camera has a sold feel to it and a good grip. It feels secure because of a flared right side and a small indent on the back with a bunch of little bumps.
TheCanon Powershot SX200is definitely no lightweight. But the camera's weight is a plus when it comes to keeping the SX200 still when taking a picture. It really fits well in either my shirt pocket or my jacket pocket. Despite it's relative heft, This wonderful device is very portable. At any rate, I certainly don't need a You Haul!
And that lens! I can't go much further with this SX200 review, without mentioning that gorgeous glass! It features a 35mm equivalent range of 28-336mm. Once you get spoiled with a 336mm in your pocket, you can never go to a 3x or 5x zoom. Sometimes, when I point the Canon sx200 at the Moon, I swear I can see the American flag! (Just kidding!)
Despite the size of the zoom, it is very smooth and controlled, unlike other "mega" zooms that I have used.
I have been extremely pleased with the images produced by the SX200. They have excellent depth of color and rich detail. There is almost no distortion at wide angle and even less at telephoto. There's a little blurring in the corners at the Canon SX200 telephoto setting, but almost none at wide angle, which is definitely a good thing.
Sometimes I cheat and use the Easy Mode on the Canon SX200 for times when I don't feel like messing with anything but the Shutter button. It's the same as Auto mode, really, except it displays instructions on the screen.
